The law of causality holds only for representation and can never lead beyond it
From an effect one can infer only a cause in general, not a like cause; and with the law of causality one remains always in the domain of mere representation, for which alone the law holds and beyond which it can never lead.
§ 19, ZA I 146–147: the law of causality is »für Vorstellungen a priori sicher«, but »abgesehn davon, daß sich von der Wirkung nur auf eine Ursache überhaupt, nicht auf eine gleiche Ursache schließen läßt; so ist man hiemit immer noch im Gebiet der bloßen Vorstellung, für die allein das Gesetz der Kausalität gilt, und über welches hinaus es nie führen kann.« Said here of the inference that other bodies are like one's own. The appendix does not cite it; the map reads the appendix's »Mithin« as resting on it, and lists it as a premise of a-schopenhauer-kant-derivation-cannot-reach-thing-in-itself.
