It is absurd to hope to cognize more of any object than belongs to its possible experience
It would be absurd to hope to cognize more of any object than belongs to the possible experience of it, or to lay claim to the least cognition of a thing of which we assume that it is not an object of possible experience, so as to determine what it is in itself.
Prolegomena §57, first paragraph (AA 4:350.21–26). Kant's "denn" (4:350.27) gives the ground: space, time and all concepts of the understanding have no use but to make experience possible (4:350.27–33), which the map holds as a separate claim this one depends on. It restates from the Prolegomena what B xxvi holds as the restriction of speculative cognition to objects of experience. It is the "Ungereimtheit" on one side; the next paragraph names "eine noch größere Ungereimtheit" on the other (4:350.34).
