Irrthum einer falschen Ursächlichkeit. - Man hat zu allen Zeiten geglaubt, zu wissen, was eine Ursache ist: aber woher nahmen wir unser Wissen, genauer, unsern Glauben, hier zu wissen? Aus dem Bereich der berühmten "inneren Thatsachen", von denen bisher keine sich als thatsächlich erwiesen hat. Wir glaubten uns selbst im Akt des Willens ursächlich; wir meinten da wenigstens die Ursächlichkeit auf der That zu ertappen. Man zweifelte insgleichen nicht daran, dass alle antecedentia einer Handlung, ihre Ursachen, im Bewusstsein zu suchen seien und darin sich wiederfänden, wenn man sie suche - als "Motive": man wäre ja sonst zu ihr nicht frei, für sie nicht verantwortlich gewesen. Endlich, wer hätte bestritten, dass ein Gedanke verursacht wird? dass das Ich den Gedanken verursacht?... Von diesen drei "inneren Thatsachen", mit denen sich die Ursächlichkeit zu verbürgen schien, ist die erste und überzeugendste die vom Willen als Ursache; die Conception eines Bewusstseins ("Geistes") als Ursache und später noch die des Ich (des "Subjekts") als Ursache sind bloss nachgeboren, nachdem vom Willen die Ursächlichkeit als gegeben feststand, als Empirie... Inzwischen haben wir uns besser besonnen. Wir glauben heute kein Wort mehr von dem Allen. Die "innere Welt" ist voller Trugbilder und Irrlichter: der Wille ist eins von ihnen. Der Wille bewegt nichts mehr, erklärt folglich auch nichts mehr - er begleitet bloss Vorgänge, er kann auch fehlen. Das sogenannte "Motiv": ein andrer Irrthum. Bloss ein Oberflächenphänomen des Bewusstseins, ein Nebenher der That, das eher noch die antecedentia einer That verdeckt, als dass es sie darstellt. Und gar das Ich! Das ist zur Fabel geworden, zur Fiktion, zum Wortspiel: das hat ganz und gar aufgehört, zu denken, zu fühlen und zu wollen!... Was folgt daraus? Es giebt gar keine geistigen Ursachen! Die ganze angebliche Empirie dafür gieng zum Teufel! Das folgt daraus! -
Error of a false causality. – At all times one has believed one knew what a cause is: but from where did we take our knowledge, more exactly, our belief that we know here? From the realm of the famous "inner facts", of which none has so far proved to be factual. We believed ourselves to be causal in the act of will; there at least we thought we caught causality in the act. Likewise one did not doubt that all antecedentia of an action, its causes, were to be sought in consciousness and would be found again there if one sought them – as "motives": for otherwise one would not have been free for it, not responsible for it. Finally, who would have disputed that a thought is caused? that the I causes the thought?... Of these three "inner facts" by which causality seemed to be vouched for, the first and most convincing is that of the will as cause; the conception of a consciousness ("spirit") as cause and later still that of the I (the "subject") as cause are merely born afterwards, once the causality of the will stood fixed as given, as empirical fact... Meanwhile we have thought better of it. Today we no longer believe a word of all that. The "inner world" is full of phantoms and will-o'-the-wisps: the will is one of them. The will moves nothing any more, consequently explains nothing any more either – it merely accompanies processes, it can also be absent. The so-called "motive": another error. Merely a surface phenomenon of consciousness, something alongside the deed, which sooner conceals the antecedentia of a deed than represents them. And then the I! That has become a fable, a fiction, a play on words: it has altogether ceased to think, to feel and to will!... What follows from that? There are no spiritual causes at all! The whole alleged empirical evidence for them has gone to the devil! That is what follows from it! – — the project
