The mechanistic world may be understood from the reality of the drives, not as representation in the Schopenhauerian sense
Supposing that nothing else is given as real than our world of desires and passions, that we can get down or up to no other reality than precisely the reality of our drives, it is permitted (and, the aphorism adds, from the conscience of method commanded) to attempt to understand the mechanistic world from what is like this given: not as a deception, a semblance, a representation in the Berkeleyan and Schopenhauerian sense, but as of the same rank of reality that our affect itself has.
Supposing that nothing else is "given" as real than our world of desires and passions, that we can get down or up to no other "reality" than precisely the reality of our drives – for thinking is only a relation of these drives to one another –: is it not permitted to make the attempt and to ask the question whether this given does not suffice for understanding, from what is like it, also the so-called mechanistic (or "material") world? I do not mean as a deception, a "semblance", a "representation" (in the Berkeleyan and Schopenhauerian sense), but as of the same rank of reality that our affect itself has
The statement keeps the »Gesetzt« and the »Versuch«: the aphorism proposes an attempt and does not assert its result. The Schopenhauerian sense named is WWV I § 1, c-schopenhauer-world-is-my-representation; the map sets no attack link, because a proposal to try the contrary is not a denial of what that claim states, and records the contrast here and on the comparison page. The attempt's end is c-nietzsche-world-would-be-will-to-power.
