Today, conversely, we see ourselves, exactly as far as the prejudice of reason compels us to posit unity, identity, duration, substance, cause, thinghood, being, in a certain measure entangled in error, necessitated to error; so sure are we, on the ground of a strict reckoning, that the error is here. It is no different from the movements of the great star: there the error has our eye as its constant advocate, here our language. Language belongs by its origin to the time of the most rudimentary form of psychology: we enter into a crude fetishism when we bring to consciousness the basic presuppositions of the metaphysics of language, in plain German: of reason. That sees everywhere doers and doing: that believes in will as cause in general; that believes in the "I", in the I as being, in the I as substance, and projects the belief in the I-substance onto all things – only thereby does it create the concept "thing"... Being is everywhere thought in as cause, foisted in; from the conception "I" there follows first, as derived, the concept "being"... At the beginning stands the great calamity of an error, that the will is something that works, – that will is a faculty... Today we know that it is merely a word... — the project
